The Basic Concrete Formula

Concrete is measured in cubic yards (or cubic meters). The basic formula for calculating concrete volume is:

Volume = Length × Width × Depth

The key is to ensure all measurements are in the same unit. For cubic yards:

Cubic Yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) ÷ 27

(27 cubic feet = 1 cubic yard)

Calculating for Slabs & Patios

Slabs are the most common concrete project. Here's how to calculate:

Step-by-Step for a 10×10 Patio (4" thick)

  1. 1. Convert depth to feet: 4 inches ÷ 12 = 0.33 feet
  2. 2. Calculate volume: 10 × 10 × 0.33 = 33.3 cubic feet
  3. 3. Convert to yards: 33.3 ÷ 27 = 1.23 cubic yards
  4. 4. Add 10% waste: 1.23 × 1.1 = 1.35 cubic yards

Recommended Slab Thickness:

Sidewalks & Patios4 inches
Residential Driveways4-6 inches
Garage Floors6 inches
Heavy Vehicle Areas6-8 inches

Calculating for Footings

Footings support walls and structures. They're typically rectangular and deeper than slabs.

Continuous Footing Example

For a footing 40 feet long, 2 feet wide, 1 foot deep:

Volume = 40 × 2 × 1 = 80 cubic feet = 2.96 cubic yards

Important: Always check local building codes for minimum footing sizes based on soil conditions and load requirements.

Calculating for Columns & Posts

Round columns use a different formula based on the cylinder volume:

Volume = π × radius² × height

π (pi) ≈ 3.14159

Example: 12-inch diameter post, 3 feet deep

  1. 1. Convert diameter to feet: 12 ÷ 12 = 1 foot
  2. 2. Calculate radius: 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 feet
  3. 3. Volume = 3.14159 × 0.5² × 3 = 2.36 cubic feet
  4. 4. Per post = 2.36 ÷ 27 = 0.087 cubic yards

For 10 posts: 0.087 × 10 = 0.87 cubic yards

Bags vs Ready-Mix Concrete

Pre-Mixed Bags

  • Good for small projects
  • No minimum order
  • Easy to store unused bags
  • • 60lb bag = 0.45 cubic feet
  • • 80lb bag = 0.60 cubic feet
  • • Cost: $5-8 per bag

Ready-Mix (Truck Delivery)

  • Best for 1+ cubic yards
  • Consistent quality
  • Faster for large pours
  • • Minimum order usually 1 yard
  • • Cost: $120-150 per yard
  • • May have delivery fees

Rule of Thumb: If you need more than 45 bags (about 1 cubic yard), ready-mix is usually more economical and easier.

Common Project Examples

10×10 Patio (4" thick)1.23 yards / 50 bags (80lb)

Popular size for small backyard patios

12×20 Driveway (5" thick)3.7 yards / 167 bags

Standard single-car driveway extension

4×30 Sidewalk (4" thick)1.48 yards / 60 bags

Standard sidewalk width

20×20 Garage Floor (6" thick)7.4 yards / 333 bags

Two-car garage floor

Fence Post Hole (10" × 3')0.07 yards / 3 bags per hole

Standard 4×4 fence post

Pro Tips & Common Mistakes

Do This:

  • • Always order 10% extra for waste and spillage
  • • Measure twice, calculate once
  • • Check weather forecast - avoid pouring in rain or extreme temperatures
  • • Have all tools and forms ready before concrete arrives
  • • For ready-mix, have extra help available to work quickly

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • • Don't add extra water to concrete - weakens the mix
  • • Don't pour on frozen ground
  • • Don't skip the gravel/sand base for slabs
  • • Don't underestimate the time needed for finishing
  • • Don't forget to call for utility line marking
