What is a Tip?

A tip, also known as a gratuity, is an extra amount of money given to service workers as a token of appreciation for their service. In many countries, especially the United States, tipping is not just customary but expected as service workers often rely on tips as a significant portion of their income.

The word "tip" is believed to have originated from 18th century English coffeehouses where boxes labeled "To Insure Promptness" (T.I.P.) were placed on tables to encourage faster service.

The Quick Tip Formula

Tip Amount = Bill Total × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100)

For example, if your bill is $50 and you want to leave a 20% tip:

Tip = $50 × (20 ÷ 100) = $50 × 0.20 = $10

Total to Pay = $50 + $10 = $60

Standard Tip Percentages

Different services have different tipping expectations. Here's a comprehensive guide:

Restaurants (Sit-Down)

15% - Adequate service18-20% - Good service25%+ - Excellent service

Tip more for bad weather, large orders, or long distances

When to Tip More or Less

Tip More When:

  • • Service exceeded expectations
  • • Large group or complex order
  • • Holiday or special occasion
  • • Bad weather (for delivery)
  • • Server went above and beyond
  • • You're a regular customer

Consider Reducing When:

  • • Service was genuinely poor
  • • Server was rude or inattentive
  • • Major mistakes without apology

Note: Kitchen errors aren't the server's fault. Consider speaking to a manager instead of reducing tip.

Splitting Bills with Tips

When dining with friends, here's the fairest way to split:

Method 1: Split Total (Including Tip)

Add tip to bill, then divide by number of people:

Per Person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ Number of People

Method 2: Individual Bills with Tip

Each person calculates tip on their own order:

Your Share = Your Items + (Your Items × Tip %)

Mental Math Tricks for Quick Tips

For 10%

Simply move the decimal point one place left

$45.00 → $4.50

For 15%

Calculate 10%, then add half of that

$40 → $4.00 (10%) + $2.00 (5%) = $6.00

For 20%

Calculate 10% and double it

$55 → $5.50 × 2 = $11.00

For 25%

Calculate 10%, double it, then add half of 10%

$40 → $4 + $4 + $2 = $10.00
