How do you calculate attendance percentage?

Attendance percentage = (classes attended ÷ total classes held) × 100. If you attended 42 out of 55 lectures, your attendance is 42 ÷ 55 × 100 = 76.36%. Colleges count each lecture, tutorial and practical session separately, so always use the total number of sessions held rather than the number of days.

How many classes can I miss and still keep 75% attendance?

You can miss classes until your attended count divided by the new total falls below 75%. The formula is: bunks allowed = (attended ÷ 0.75) − total held. If you have attended 60 of 70 classes, you can skip 10 more (60 ÷ 0.75 = 80, minus 70 = 10) before you drop below 75%. The calculator above works this out instantly.

How many classes do I need to attend to reach 75%?

Use: classes needed = (0.75 × total held − attended) ÷ 0.25, rounded up. If you have attended 30 of 50 classes (60%), you need (37.5 − 30) ÷ 0.25 = 30 consecutive classes to climb back to 75%. This assumes you attend every single class from now on.

Why is 75% attendance required in Indian colleges?

Most universities affiliated with UGC guidelines, along with AICTE-approved engineering colleges, set 75% as the minimum attendance to be eligible to sit end-semester examinations. Falling below the minimum usually means you are detained from the end-semester examination for that subject, which means repeating the course. Does medical leave count towards attendance?

It depends on the institution. Most colleges treat documented medical leave and officially approved duty leave (sports, NSS, NCC, conferences) as attended for the purpose of the minimum requirement, but you must submit the certificate to the department within the deadline. How is attendance calculated subject-wise vs overall?

How Attendance Percentage Is Calculated

The three formulas that matter

Attendance % = (Attended ÷ Total held) × 100
Bunks allowed = (Attended ÷ Target) − Total held
Classes needed = (Target × Total held − Attended) ÷ (1 − Target)

The third formula is the one students underestimate. At a 75% target, every single class you miss costs three classes of catch-up, because you need three attended classes to restore the ratio that one absence broke.

Worked example

Suppose you have attended 60 of 80 classes and your college requires 75%:

Current attendance = 60 ÷ 80 × 100 = 75.00% — exactly at the line
Bunks allowed = (60 ÷ 0.75) − 80 = 80 − 80 = 0
Miss just one more and you are at 60 ÷ 81 = 74.07%
To get back you would need (0.75 × 81 − 60) ÷ 0.25 = 3 consecutive classes
