SGPA Calculator

Calculate your Semester Grade Point Average from credits and grades — or straight from marks. Convert SGPA to percentage using your university formula and combine semesters into CGPA.

4 credits × 9 points = 36 credit points

3 credits × 8 points = 24 credit points

3 credits × 7 points = 21 credit points

How to Calculate SGPA

The formula

SGPA = Σ (Credits × Grade points) ÷ Σ Credits

The word that matters is credits. SGPA is not the average of your grade points — it is the average weighted by how many credits each subject carries. Averaging grade points directly is the single most common SGPA mistake, and it can be off by several tenths when your subjects carry very different credit loads.

Worked example

SubjectCreditsGrade pointsCredit points
Engineering Mathematics4936
Data Structures4832
Digital Electronics3721
Environmental Studies21020
Workshop Practice11010
Total14119

SGPA = 119 ÷ 14 = 8.50. Note what the unweighted average would have given you: (9+8+7+10+10) ÷ 5 = 8.80. The two 10s came from small 1 and 2 credit subjects, so the weighted figure — the real one — is lower.

Standard grade point bands

MarksGradeGrade pointsDescription
90100O10Outstanding
8089A+9Excellent
7079A8Very good
6069B+7Good
5059B6Above average
4049C5Pass

This is the most widely used 10-point band structure, followed by UGC-aligned universities, most state technical universities and autonomous engineering colleges. Some institutions shift the boundaries by a few marks — check your ordinance.

SGPA to percentage — why the answers differ

There is no single national conversion formula, which is why the same SGPA can be quoted as wildly different percentages:

SGPA(SGPA × 10) − 7.5SGPA × 10SGPA × 9.5(SGPA − 0.5) × 10
6.052.50%60.00%57.00%55.00%
7.062.50%70.00%66.50%65.00%
7.567.50%75.00%71.25%70.00%
8.072.50%80.00%76.00%75.00%
8.577.50%85.00%80.75%80.00%
9.082.50%90.00%85.50%85.00%
9.587.50%95.00%90.25%90.00%
10.092.50%100.00%95.00%95.00%

An 8.5 SGPA is 77.5% under one formula and 85% under another — a 7.5 point spread. On a job application or a university form that difference matters, so use the formula printed in your university ordinance, and if in doubt request the official conversion certificate.

SGPA vs CGPA

SGPA is a snapshot of one semester; CGPA is the cumulative picture. If every semester carried identical credits, CGPA would just be the average of your SGPAs. In practice credit loads vary — project semesters in particular are credit-heavy — so the correct rollup is:

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester credits) ÷ Σ Semester credits

The effect of a backlog

A failed subject scores zero grade points while its credits remain in the denominator, so it hits SGPA twice as hard as a merely poor grade. Failing a 4-credit subject in a 20-credit semester costs you roughly two full grade points of SGPA even if every other subject went well. The corollary is encouraging: clearing that backlog recovers most of the loss, because universities recompute the semester with the replacement grade.
