CGPA to Percentage Calculator
Convert CGPA to percentage using your own university formula — CBSE ×9.5, the (CGPA×10)−7.5 standard, or a straight ×10 — and see what every other formula would give you side by side.
CGPA to Percentage: Every Formula Explained
There is no single national formula
This is the part that causes most of the confusion. India has no universal CGPA-to-percentage conversion. Each board, university and autonomous institution sets its own, and the results differ by up to eight percentage points for the same CGPA. Using the wrong one on a job application or admission form is not a rounding error — it is a misstatement.
The five formulas in common use
| Formula | Typically used by | 9.0 CGPA gives |
|---|---|---|
| CGPA × 9.5 | CBSE Class 10 and most school boards | 85.50% |
| (CGPA × 10) − 7.5 | Many technical and state universities | 82.50% |
| CGPA × 10 | Straight 10-point conversion | 90.00% |
| (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 | Some state universities | 85.00% |
| (CGPA × 10) − 3.75 | SRM and some private universities | 86.25% |
Why CBSE chose 9.5
The 9.5 multiplier is not arbitrary. CBSE examined five years of results data for students scoring between A1 and D2, calculated the average marks behind each grade point, and found the ratio converged on approximately 9.5. The board adopted it as the official conversion for the Class 10 CGPA. It is specific to CBSE's grading distribution and was never intended to apply to university-level CGPAs.

Percentage to CGPA — the reverse
Every formula inverts cleanly, so working backwards is straightforward provided you use the same formula in both directions:
| Forward | Reverse |
|---|---|
| % = CGPA × 9.5 | CGPA = % ÷ 9.5 |
| % = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5 | CGPA = (% + 7.5) ÷ 10 |
| % = CGPA × 10 | CGPA = % ÷ 10 |
| % = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 | CGPA = (% ÷ 10) + 0.5 |
| % = (CGPA × 10) − 3.75 | CGPA = (% + 3.75) ÷ 10 |
Division and class boundaries
| Percentage | Division | CGPA under (×10)−7.5 |
|---|---|---|
| 75% and above | First class with distinction | 8.25+ |
| 60% – 74.99% | First class | 6.75 – 8.24 |
| 50% – 59.99% | Second class | 5.75 – 6.74 |
| 40% – 49.99% | Pass class | 4.75 – 5.74 |
Boundaries vary by institution; some set first class at 55% or 65%. Check your own regulations.
Applying abroad
Most universities outside India ask for the original CGPA on its stated scale together with an official transcript, not a converted percentage. Credential evaluators such as WES apply their own conversion to a US 4.0 scale, and that conversion will not match anything you calculate yourself. Submitting a self-converted percentage without supporting documentation is one of the more common reasons applications get held up for clarification.
