How do you calculate total work experience?

Count the years, months and days between your joining date and your last working day for each job, then add every stint together. The calendar method counts whole months rather than dividing days by 30, so 15 March 2021 to 15 June 2023 is exactly 2 years 3 months, not 2 years 2 months and 29 days. This calculator uses the calendar method and lets you add unlimited jobs.

Is the last working day counted in work experience?

Yes, in Indian and Pakistani practice the last working day is normally counted as a served day, so a 1 January to 31 January stint is one full month, not 30 days. This calculator includes the end date by default, and you can switch it off if your employer calculates exclusively.

How is total experience written on a resume?

Most recruiters expect years and months rounded to one decimal, such as "5.6 years" or "5 years 7 months". Never round up aggressively — an ATS or a background verification check will flag the difference. This calculator gives you the exact figure in years and months, in decimal years, and in total months so you can match whatever format the application form asks for.

How do I calculate experience with overlapping jobs?

If you held two roles at the same time, most employers count the calendar period only once rather than adding both. Enable the "merge overlapping periods" option in the calculator and it will count each calendar day a single time, giving you the figure a background verification agency would arrive at.

Do notice period and gaps count as experience?

A served notice period counts because you were on the payroll. A bought-out notice period usually does not. Employment gaps between jobs never count. The calculator shows total gap days across your career, which is useful because recruiters routinely ask candidates to explain any gap longer than about three months.

How many months is 2.5 years of experience?

2.5 years is 30 months. To convert decimal years to months multiply by 12: 1.5 years = 18 months, 3.5 years = 42 months, 4.8 years = about 57.6 months. Note that 4.8 years does not mean 4 years 8 months — it means 4 years and 9.6 months, which is a very common mistake on resumes.

Does internship count as work experience?

Paid full-time internships are usually counted, especially in the IT sector in India, provided you can show an offer letter and a relieving or completion certificate. Unpaid, part-time or academic-credit internships are generally excluded from the "total years of experience" field but can still be listed on the resume separately. Add them as separate rows here and you can see the totals with and without.

How is experience calculated for government jobs in India?

Government recruitment rules almost always specify experience "as on" a cut-off date stated in the notification, not as on the application date. Enter that cut-off as the end date for your current job to get the figure the recruiting body will actually use. Experience is usually required to be post-qualification, so periods worked before you obtained the essential qualification will not be counted.

How Work Experience Is Calculated

Calendar method vs the 30-day shortcut

There are two ways to measure a stint, and they give different answers. The calendar method counts whole months as the calendar defines them: 15 March 2021 to 14 March 2022 is exactly one year regardless of how many days each month held. The 30-day method divides total days by 30, which inflates long tenures by about six days a year.

Indian and Pakistani employers, and every background verification agency, use the calendar method for the years-and-months figure. This calculator uses it too, and shows the exact day count alongside so you can cross-check against a relieving letter.

Does the last working day count?

Yes, by convention. If you joined on 1 January and your last working day was 31 January, you served a full month — not 30 days. The same logic applies at year scale: 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2023 is exactly three years. That is why this calculator adds one day to the end date by default, and why turning that option off produces a figure one day shorter for every job.

Decimal years — the common resume mistake

Job portals ask for experience as a decimal, and candidates routinely write 4 years 8 months as "4.8 years". It is not. Months convert to a fraction of twelve, not of ten:

Government job applications in India

Recruitment notifications from UPSC, SSC, state PSCs and PSUs almost always specify experience as on a stated cut-off date, not as on the day you apply. Enter that cut-off as the end date for your current job and you will get the figure the recruiting body will actually use. Two further rules catch applicants out regularly: experience is normally required to be post-qualification, so anything worked before you obtained the essential degree is excluded, and only experience in a post of comparable level and pay scale usually counts.

Overlapping roles

If you moonlighted, consulted alongside a full-time role, or your new joining date fell before your old last working day, the overlapping calendar days should be counted once. Adding both stints in full would show, for example, 11 years of experience for someone who has been working for 10 — a discrepancy background verification will find. Keep "count overlapping periods only once" enabled unless you have a specific reason not to.
