How is GPA calculated at SRM?

The formula

GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade points) ÷ Σ Credits
CGPA = Σ (Credits × Grade points across all semesters) ÷ Σ All credits

Because the weighting is by credits, a 4-credit core subject moves your GPA four times as much as a 1-credit course. Students often optimise the wrong way round here — chasing an O in a light elective while accepting a B+ in a heavy core paper actively lowers the average.

Take a 22-credit semester with everything at A+ (9 points) except one failed 4-credit course:

Without the failure: 22 × 9 = 198 credit points ÷ 22 = 9.00 GPA
With one 4-credit F: 18 × 9 = 162 credit points ÷ 22 = 7.36 GPA

One arrear costs 1.64 GPA points — far more than most students expect, because the credits stay in the denominator while contributing nothing to the numerator. Clearing it later restores almost all of that, which is why arrear clearance beats grade improvement as a CGPA strategy nearly every time.

Placement eligibility in practice

Most SRM campus drives set two independent gates: a CGPA floor, commonly 7.0 but 7.5 or 8.0 for premium recruiters, and a no-standing-arrears condition. The second gate disqualifies more students than the first. A candidate at 8.4 CGPA with one uncleared backlog is filtered out of drives that a 7.1 CGPA student with a clean record clears comfortably.
